He opens the door and the chimes’ sound across the store. Ohno gets ready to steer his wheelchair in, but before his hands even reach the wheels, he feels himself moving. “You should’ve called me if you wanted to come. I would’ve picked you up,” says a voice from behind him.

Ohno just smiles up at his fiancé, letting him push him past the door and into the store. “It’s not like I can’t do it myself, Jun. You’ve pampered me so much already, you know? What should I do if I get used to it and then you’re not there for me?”

He’s tried his best to explain this to his fiancé. Really, he doesn’t want to be too dependent on others’ help. But it seems that his fiancé won’t buy his explanation. He feels his wheelchair halt before his fiancé squats down in front of him.

“I’m not going anywhere, Satoshi. Believe me on that. Plus, you are my fiancé. My future husband. My love. My other half. Of course I’d like to pamper you as much as I can.” Jun cups his face while saying the words slowly, gaining his approval to be pampered.

Ohno smiles when he hears this. He knows that Jun loves him very much; it must’ve felt like a miracle for Jun when Ohno finally accepted his proposal.

“Ah, there are the lovebirds!”

Jun doesn’t let go of Ohno’s hand even after hearing their friend’s exclamation. He just leans forward and pecks Ohno’s lips before letting go.

“Jya, I’ll let Masaki attend to you. Take your time here, dear.”

Ohno smiles before letting his man go. He watches as Jun gets to work and Aiba comes over.

“I’m glad you accepted his proposal, Oh-chan,” Aiba whispers in his ear while keeping an eye on Jun. Ohno looks at Jun, noting how he’s entertaining his customer, meeting their needs.

This fashion apparel store is owned by Masaki and Jun. They opened the store three years ago; that’s when Ohno first got to know Jun. Just recently he accepted Jun’s proposal of marriage.

Ohno knows that Jun already set his eyes on him from the beginning of their friendship. But back then, he belonged to somebody else.

He belonged to Nino.

“Hurry up, Satoshi! It’s almost 9.30!”

Ohno drags his feet upon hearing his lover rushing him. He lets out a sigh before pulling the hand that’s linked with his. It brings Nino to a stop.

“We need to hurry, Satoshi. Not stop in the middle of the sidewalk.”

“Like you said, it’s the sidewalk. We’re just around the corner. Calm down, honey.”

Of course, all Ohno received was a cute pout.

“But I don’t want to be late. We need to be the first customers. It’s Masaki-nii's shop.”

Ohno resumes walking and pulls Nino along. This time they walk more leisurely.

“It’s almost 9.30,” says Ohno, “It’s not 9.30 yet. And Masaki’s shop opens at 10. It won’t take more than 10 minutes from here. There’s no need to rush.”

“But it’s an important day for Masaki-nii. I want to be the first customer.”

“Hai, hai. You will be, Kazu. Don’t worry. See, we already can see the shop fro—” Ohno doesn’t have the chance to finish his line because Nino starts to drag him along again, this time faster than before.

Ohno lets him. Masaki only has Nino and vice versa. They don’t have any living relatives and Ohno knows very well how much they mean to each other.

Soon Ohno finds himself in front of a store with a green and purple wall. Surprisingly, despite the colour combination, it isn’t an eyesore. It’s quite elegant, with Masaki’s flair, giving off a fresh and cheerful feeling. However, before he even takes a step into the store, someone grabs his hand, preventing him from moving further.

“I’m sorry sir, the store is not open yet. Would you wait for a while?”

Standing there in front of them is a good-looking man, taller than both of them. He’s smiling at them.

Ohno takes a look at Nino and they both ask a silent question: who is this?

Aiba pops up in front of them.

“Ah, gomen ne Jun-pon. I forgot to tell you. Let me introduce you—this is my brother, Ninomiya Kazunari. His boyfriend, Ohno Satoshi.”

“Kazu-chan, Oh-chan, this is Matsumoto Jun, my business partner.” Aiba bows apologetically after introducing all of them.

“Ninomiya? But your surname is Aiba.”Jun turns to Aiba while he asks his question.

“Long story short, we’re half-brothers,” Nino answers Jun’s question before his brother launches into a lengthy explanation.

“Aa~ Moshiwake arimasendeshita. I’m Jun.”

It’s to Ohno that Jun holds out his hand. Ohno hesitantly takes it. Jun shakes Nino’s hand after.

“Let’s move inside,” Aiba says, inviting Ohno and Nino inside the store. Ohno and Nino start helping them to set up for the day.

“How was today?” Jun asks as he pushes Ohno across the park they’re taking a stroll in.

“Today?”

“Your job interview at the bakery.”

“Aa, that! I made it! They said they want to hire me, and if everything goes okay, I’ll start this Monday!” Ohno shares the happy news enthusiastically. He turns to look at Jun, but before he can, Jun hugs him tightly from the back.

“Yokatta ne, Satoshi. I’m proud of you. I can’t wait to visit you at work. I’ll go there everyday, I promise.”

When Jun plants a kiss on top of his head, Ohno is relieved that Jun can’t see him blushing. It’s been a long time since someone has cared for him like this.

It’s also been a long time since he had work. Nine months, to be precise. Nine months after that tragic accident, the accident that took his ability to move freely.

The accident that took his Nino.

***

Over nine months ago

Nino stops the car at the side of the pier. His passenger opens the door and settles into the seat beside him. Nino knows his passenger is smiling sweetly towards him but he isn’t going to pay attention to him. Not when he’s still mad.

“Kazu. I’m sorry, okay?” Ohno tries to apologise. But Nino is still mad at him and won’t buy his words.

He knows that it was his fault not to inform Nino beforehand that he was going out with a friend. It’s not like Nino restricts him from meeting his friends. Ohno guesses that if he were in Nino’s shoes, he’d also act like how Nino is now.

It’s just that he was stressed out with all the choreography that he needed to get done by the end of this month, so when one of his friends contacted him to go fishing, he agreed to it on the spot. Fishing refreshes his mind and relaxes his body from all those movements he needs to think up.

One mistake that he committed was forgetting to contact Nino about his whereabouts. He’d been too immersed in his fishing activity until he forgot the time. He’s been missing from Nino radar for almost six hours; of course Nino was frantic about that.

“Kazu, don’t be like this. You know that I can’t stand you being silent. It’s killing me, you know. Talk to me, please,” Ohno continues persuading him.

Nino looks straight on at the empty road.

“Kazu-chan, you can do anything to me—you can shout at me, or hit me like a punching bag. But please don’t stay silent like this. I miss your voice.”

“Now you say you miss my voice?” Nino flares up. “How about you say it six hours ago before telling me you’re going fishing? Toshi, you know I don’t restrain you from meeting with any of your friends. Even Jun, who always strikes me as weird with the way he looks at you. But six hours! Do you know how worried I was? No calls, no messages. Nothing. No one knew where you were. I thought of every worst thing that could happen to you. I started to imagine what I’d do if you’re not coming back again. Start to th—”

Ohno silences Nino by kissing him on the side of his mouth.

“You don’t - get - to - kiss - me!” Nino suddenly roars, punching Ohno’s arm hard with every syllable. Ohno knows how furious Nino is and squeezes his eyes shut, letting Nino rain his punches, when suddenly there is a deafening, drawn out honk. Ohno opens his eyes to blinding light, and hears Nino gasp.

A truck is coming at them.

The last thing Ohno remembers is calling out Nino name, before there is a crash and everything goes black.

***

Ohno clutches the fabric of his trousers as he remembers the moment at the hospital when he could no longer feel any movement in his legs. He also learnt from Aiba that Nino lost his fight to stay alive.
Ohno became a living corpse after that. He’d dreamt about spending the rest of his life with Nino—until they became old, until death did them part. He never thought that death would come this soon.
Months passed. Aiba and Jun were always there for him. Ohno knew that Jun recognised he now had a chance with Ohno, but Jun didn’t make any advances; he was too considerate a person.
What Jun did was to shower him with affection and protection, and soon even Aiba was suggesting to Ohno that there might be something worth pursuing with Jun. Aiba always said Nino was in heaven watching over them, and he’d support whatever decision that Ohno made.

Eventually, Aiba’s words provided a great push for Ohnoto accept Jun’s proposal. It meant Ohno opened up his heart to fall in love again.

He sometimes wonders if he’s being unfair to Jun. Jun knows he’ll never forget Nino, and that he can’t love Jun the same way he loved Nino. But Jun seems to accept that.

“Don’t worry, Satoshi,” Jun always says, “Everything will be alright.”

Before going to bed, Ohno sits in front of the picture of Nino that he’s placed in his living room.

“Kazu. I’ve got a job at a bakery. It’s got nothing to do with dance, but it’s still a job that I love. You always said that I’m good at baking, even though I rarely baked for you.”

Ohno is relieved that he can earn money for his life again, but little does he know how Fate is going to play with him.

***

It’s almost 1 o’clock. Ohno will be having lunch with Jun today like always. Jun’s already texted him, has let him know that he’s on his way.

“Irasshaimase!” Ohno hears his co-worker greet the customer that’s entering the bakery. He can hear the customer’s voice, and it makes him turn around at it’s shocking familiarity.

He thinks he is hallucinating when there, in front of him, stands Nino.

“Sho-chan, what should we get for Toma? Which cake do you think he likes?” asks the man who looks so much like Nino.

“I’m not sure. Why doesn’t my Kazu choose the most delicious one?” replies his companion.

‘Kazu.’ Ohno cringes in his heart. He finds himself moving towards the two.

“Hee~ Which one is the most delicious? Everything looks delicious. And I know you can’t choose because you like everyth—” The man stops talking, jerking away when Ohno pulls on his hand.

“Nino. Kazu. My Kazu,” Ohno says desperately, and it makes both the customers look at him strangely. The guy—‘Sho-chan’—tries to free the doppelgänger’s hand from Ohno’s grip but it only makes Ohno hold on tighter.

“How do you know my name? Who are you?”

“It is me, Toshi. Your Satoshi. How could you forget about me? Where did you go all this time? Don’t you know that it’s so sad to be left alone? And now you appear all of a sudden with someone else! Do you know how hurt I am?”

“I’m sorry sir. But I don’t think I know you. I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

“No, I’ve not. You are Kazu. My Kazu.”

Before the man can respond, another voice cuts in.

“I’m sorry, sir. My boyfriend seems to have mistaken you for someone else. Please let me apologise on his behalf.” Jun comes to in front of Ohno, facing the two customers.

“No, Jun,” Ohno starts protesting, “He is Nino, can’t you see? I’m not hallucinating.”

Jun sighs. He’s also surprised to see how much the man looks like Nino. But it can’t be; Nino is dead. Ohno’s behaviour is worrying him.

“I’m sorry sir, this may be an inconvenience to you, but may I know your name?”Jun asks politely.

“Ii yo. My name is Ninomiya.”

Jun takes a sharp intake of breath. ‘No way.’

Ninomiya gives Jun a puzzled look as he fishes something out of his bag.

“Ninomiya Kazuaki,” the man goes on to say, “Here’s my name card. I’m a game designer” Ninomiya hands out his name card and Ohno takes a look at it.

Ninomiya Kazuaki—just one character different from his Nino.

Jun lets out all his break with a sigh. As he thought, it’s a different person. He takes a look at Ohno, and all he can see is Ohno’s disappointment; a stark contrast against his relief.

They apologize once again to Ninomiya and ‘Sho-chan’ before the two leave the bakery. Jun feels guilty for being relieved despite his lover’s frustration—but he’s just relieved that it wasn’t Nino. He can’t bear to think of Ohno suddenly leaving him to be with Nino.

Ohno stays silent throughout their lunch that day. But when Jun tries to cheer him up, Ohno’s smiles are forced.

It hurts Jun. He knows that he can’t replace Nino in Ohno’s heart. It hurts when Ohno forces himself to do something in front of him. It hurts to see Ohno closing up all his feelings.

“I know you just accepted my proposal. But I think we need a break.”

Ohno raises his head and looks into Jun’s eyes. He can see a heart hurting in them.

Ohno feels guilty, and terribly confused. All he wants now is to confront Ninomiya and ask why he has the same face and surname as his Kazu.

But Ohno knows he’s greedy. He wants Jun for himself. He doesn’t want to be left behind again.

“Why?” asks Ohno.

Jun takes Ohno’s hand and places it on his cheek.

“We’re not breaking up. We’re just taking a break, until you get your feelings sorted. I know you can’t love me as you loved Nino. But I also know that somewhere in your heart, there’s a place for me.”

“It’s okay to remember Nino. But please don’t hide it from me. I want you to be honest in front of me. You can tell me anything—share with me your happiness, sadness, frustration, insecurities.”

“After I lost my parents I learnt something—it’s best to express your feelings while your loved one is still right there in front of you.”

Ohno has never known that Jun’s loss is the reason behind all the affection Jun is capable of giving.

This makes him realize something. There are a lot of things Ohno doesn’t know about Jun, whereas Jun knows almost everything about him.

Time seems to move very slowly.

Jun has stuck to his words; they’re on a break. It’s Aiba that sends Ohno to and from work.

Things go like that for days. Ohno hasn’t seen Jun from the lunch they shared that day. It makes him realize his life is too lonely without Jun.

He needs Jun.

Then one day, Ninomiya Kazuaki and his companion visit the bakery once again.

Ohno goes up to them and apologizes to them properly. “I’m really sorry about my behavior the other day. It just shocked me that you have the same appearance and surname as my late lover.”

“Late lover?” asks the guy named Sho.

“My late lover, Ninomiya Kazunari. He died in a car accident months ago. This is him.” Ohno gets his handphone out from inside his pocket and shows his picture to the two.

Kazuaki stares at the picture open-mouthed. He looks surprised to see someone that was pretty much him, smiling in the picture.

“Who was the man who was with you before?” asks Kazuaki, regaining composure.

“That is my fiancé, Jun. He and Masaki-nii, Kazu’s brother, have become my source of energy, my motivation to stay alive, my pillar of strength.” Ohno’s expression turns soft as he scrolls down the picture and shows them the picture that they took on the day Aiba and Jun’s shop opened. It’s a picture of him, Nino, Aiba and Jun.

“Looks like you loved him very much, ne.”

“Nino will always be in my heart.” Ohno gives a deep sigh. “But I know I need to move on and Jun will always be waiting for me, even though I don’t know how long he can wait for me to open up my heart completely to him.”

Kazuaki smiles upon hearing this words.

“I think your Kazu must feels relief, that you’ve decided to move on,” Kazuaki says as his vision traces the picture on the phone’s screen. He takes a look at Sho and nods to him.

“Masaki also said the same thing: that Kazu must feel sad watching me depressed, as he always loved to see the smiling me.” Ohno looks at the picture after Ninomiya returns his phone. Ninomiya pats his shoulder, trying to send encouragement.

Later, after Ninomiya and Sho finish their purchase, Ohno sees them to the door. He feels at peace now that he’s met Ninomiya again; he knows what he needs to do.

He’s lost someone dear to him once. He doesn’t want to lose another one. He hopes there’s still chance for his relationship with Jun.

Over two months later…

His hand traces the name carved on the tombstone. A year has passed since he lost the one who loved him.

“Don’t worry, Kazunari. I’ll be here for him too. I’ll be here for him and make sure he leads a happy life even though you’re not here anymore. That was my promise to you remember? Even though I’m not ready to meet Masaki-nii right now, I promise that one day, I will tell him who I really am—your twin, his other brother, that got separated from you and him. I don’t know what his reaction would be. It must be shocked right?”

Ninomiya Kazuaki's phone buzzes as a text comes in.

From: Sho-chan

They’re coming.

Kazuaki turns his head to look at the stairs that lead to the cemetery. He can see Ohno being carried in, princess-style, by Jun while Aiba follows them from behind, laughing together with them with Ohno’s wheelchair in his hold.

“Jun! Let me down. It’s embarrassing.” Kazuaki hears Ohno protesting.

“I asked if I could carry you, and you agreed,” Jun says before pecking Ohno’s cheek. Aiba smiles at them.

“See, Kazunari. What a beautiful picture. I’m sure you can see it too, right? Please watch over us from above,” Kazuaki says before taking a step toward Sho, who’s waiting for him.

A breeze passes by and Kazuaki hears his brother’s voice.

“Thank you. I love you, Kazuaki.”

I was just as shocked as Ohno seeing the other 'Kazu' appear right in front of him. I like the twist that he's actually a long-lost brother! I hope they'll all be able to be a family in the end.
